The film Adaptation is a comedy-drama based upon screenwriter Charlie Kaufman’s struggle to adapt the non-fiction book, Orchid Thief, a memoir about writer Susan Orlean’s search for a ghost orchid. These orchids are only found in the Fakahatchee Strand on Florida’s west coast.
Starring Nicholas Cage playing Kaufman and his fictional twin brother Donald, Meryl Streep as Orlean and Chris Cooper as horticulturist John Laroche. Streep and Cooper won Golden Globes for Best Supporting Actor(s). Adaptation’s audience is intimately included in Kaufman’s struggle to write the screenplay. By watching the movie, the viewers also become part of the finished product. It is a sophisticated plot device that guarantees surprises. Spike Jonze directed the film.
Famous movie critic Roger Ebert (1942-2013) praised the film for its “lighthearted darkness” and plot twists. It made his list of great movies and he later called it “the best movie of the decade.” Orleans, who initially resisted the theatrical plot changes that blur fact and fiction, eventually praised the film as true to the book’s themes of life and obsession.
