Cross Creek, a critically acclaimed biographical film about Florida author Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings, is being shown on Friday, August 15 at the Fort Lauderdale Woman’s Club on 20 South Andrews Avenue. Doors open at 7:00 and the movie starts at 7:30 pm. The $5 donation includes free popcorn. Wine, beer, soda or water will be available for purchase. Free parking is available in the Woman’s Club lot or for a nominal fee in nearby City parking garages.
Mary Steenburgen, Rip Torn, Peter Coyote and Alfre Woodard star in this film; which had four Academy Award nominations in the 1983 released film. It depicts Steenburgen as the strong independent Pulitzer Prize winning author of The Yearling as she struggles to find her voice and her subject while living in the Florida scrub between Gainesville and Ocala in the 1930’s. Much of the film was shot on location and Rawling’s second husband, Norton Baskin, plays a cameo role. Cross Creek, is rated PG with a running time of 122 minutes, it is the first in a series of “Hibiscus Theatre Film Nights” the Fort Lauderdale Woman’s Club plans to show this year at their historic 1917 clubhouse.
