Hibiscus Theatre $5 Film Night is an occasional series of Florida-based movies aired at the Fort Lauderdale Woman’s Club. Previous films shown in the 2014-2015 series were Key Largo, Cross Creek and Where the Boys Are. On October 16 we are featuring the SUNSHINE STATE. This 2002 comedy-drama was written, directed and edited by noted director John Sayles. The film was shot in Fernandina Beach and Amelia Island, and stars Angela Bassett, Edie Falco, Alan King, Mary Steenburgen and Timothy Hutton.

Sayles’ script accurately touches on Florida history.  The changes wrought by integration on traditionally black businesses and white-run tourist attractions are mentioned, and there is a nod to changes in the roles of white and black women in southern states from the 1950s until the present.

Synopsis: Black and white residents of a small beachside named town Delrona Beach in northern Florida face up to change and a loss of history when developers try to buy beachfront property from Marly Temple (Edie Falco) and her father Furman (Ralph Waite).  Also at risk are the traditional black beach and a house owned by Eunice Stokes (Mary Alice).  Desiree (Angela Basset),  Eunice’s estranged beauty queen daughter, who has come home to make peace with her mother.

John Sayles received the Florida Film Critics Circle Awards Golden Orange Award 2003 for his examination of Florida’s historic past and Angela Bassett received the 2003 NAACP Image Award for Outstanding Actress in a motion picture.
